Moving To Vermont – Fun Facts

Welcome! You have just relocated to one only six U.S. states that was once its very own country. Vermont finally became a state in 1791. It was the 14th state.

Hopefully, you love maple syrup because Vermont produces over 500,000 gallons a year. It takes about 40 years for a sugar maple to grow large enough to tap. Then it takes some 40 gallons of sap to produce a single gallon of syrup. Don’t waste a drop!

Before you and your family transferred to Vermont, there was another famous family that preceded you by 80 years. That family is the famous Von Trapp family who inspired The Sound of Music and moved to Stowe, Vermont in 1942. Descendants are still running the family ski lodge—and, we hope, spontaneously bursting into song.

There are a lot of cows in Vermont, but not a lot of area codes. Let me explain this little corundum. Vermont has one cow for every 3.8 people, which is the nation’s highest ratio of cows to people. And for all these people (and cows), Vermont has one telephone area code—and they’re proud of it. You’ll see 802 on t-shirts, bumper stickers, and even tattoos.

Vermont has some funny laws:

(1) Women must get permission from their husbands to wear false teeth.

(2) Delivery men must walk backwards in driveways of homes worth more than $500,000.

(3) It’s illegal to paint landscapes during times of war.

(4) It was once illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole.

(5) In the town of Barre, all residents must bathe every Saturday night.
