Moving To North Dakota – Fun Facts

How exciting – you are moving to North Dakota. Dakota is the Sioux word for “friend” or “ally”.

If you like cold snowy winters because you are a skier, you are moving to the right state. IF you like hot summer days to be spent in a swimming pool you are moving to the right state. North Dakota has long, cold winters and short, hot summers. Both of its recorded weather extremes occurred in 1936: -60° F in February and 121° F in July.

This large state (the 19th largest US state) is also the 3rd least populous state in the US and has been ranked (in 2012) as the best-run state in the country and the state with the lowest unemployment rate. It is also the only state in the country with a state-owned bank, the Bank of North Dakota.

A North Dakotan, David Henderson, invented the first camera in 1877. He scrambled the four letters of Dakota and added a K to make it Kodak. He later sold the rights of the Kodak camera to George Eastman.

A North Dakotan highway sculpture named “Geese in Flight” holds the Guinness World Record as the largest metal sculpture in the world.
