Maine is the only state with a one-syllable name. It is also the only state that shares its borders with only one other US state – New Hampshire. Its other borders are shared with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick. Maine is the largest of the six New England states.
The Vikings are believed to have first discovered Maine around 1,000 years ago. But it wasn’t until March 15,1820 that Maine was established as the 23rd state as part of the Missouri compromise. The capital is Augusta.
