Named after King George II in 1732, Georgia was the last of the original 13 colonies to be established. It was founded to protect South Carolina from Spanish enemies in Florida. Today it is known as the “Empire State of the South” and is the 8th most populous state in the US.
Did you know that the Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world, housing more than 100,000 aquatic animals in over 10 million gallons of water?
When, after visiting the aquarium and feeling thirsty, you are happy to find Coke in the gift shop. You should know that you’ve got Georgia to thank for that! At a drugstore in Columbus, Georgia in May 1886, John Pemberton formulated the popular drink.
If you will be flying into Atlanta when you relocate to Georgia, you should know that the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world.
Here are some fun facts about Georgia: (a) Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin in Savannah in 1793, (b) Georgia has an official state fish. (Who’d have thought it?). It is the largemouth bass, (c)Georgia is the largest producer in the US of the “three P’s” – pecans, peaches, and peanuts.
Georgia’s Funny Laws:
(1) It is illegal to keep a donkey in a bathtub.
(2) No one may carry an ice cream cone in their back pocket if it is Sunday.
(3) Members of the state assembly cannot be ticketed for speeding while the state assembly is in session.
(4) Owners of mules may not allow their animal to roam around Athens-Clarke County unsupervised.
(5) You cannot give another man a piggy-back ride in Atlanta.
